The SKODA Vision C concept car was first unveiled to the world at a packed Geneva Motor Show back in 2014.  The striking design was a “vision” for what SKODA was to bring to the market the following year as a replacement for the family saloon, the SKODA Superb.

The 2015 SKODA Superb was one the most eagerly anticipated cars of the year. It was not only the latest in a long line of fantastic family saloon cars from SKODA, it was the clearest indication yet of the face of cars to come.

“you could be forgiven for mistaking the car as a limousine or grand tourer”

The twin-door concept from the previous SKODA Superb has been dropped, and in its place is a simpler 5 door hatchback and 5 door estate.  The space inside the Superb is incredible.  The driver and passenger have ample arm and head space thanks to the clever adjustable seating.  Leg room isn’t a worry either as there is enough room in the back for a tall adult even with the driver’s seat all the way back. The comfortable rear sculptured seats are heated on the higher spec cars, and the rear passengers have their own climate control settings, independent from those at the front of the cabin.

By now you could be forgiven for mistaking the car as a limousine or grand tourer built to rival the German manufacturers.  A reminder of the family orientation can be found, however, in the boot.  One of the largest spaces in its class, the Superb hatchback’s boot is a whopping 625 litres. If you’re planning a trip with your mountain bike or an annual pilgrimage to the recycling centre, you can drop the rear seats to revel another 1100 litres of space.

“the 2.0 TSI 280ps launches you to 60 mph in a mind boggling 5.8 seconds”

Space isn’t the only thing the Superb offers in great quantities either.  Little things have been thought of to make living with the car much more pleasurable.  There are umbrellas stowed away inside the front doors, a torch in the boot – the front cup holders even allow you to open a bottle using only one hand.

If you’re returning from the shops with handfuls of shopping, the boot will open its self, using the ‘Virtual Pedal’ – just wave your foot under the rear of the car, and the motorized boot lid will open.

Power to the new Superb is delivered from an array of engines, including the brilliant 1.4 TSI petrol engine.  At the other end of the spectrum is the most powerful SKODA engine ever built, the 2.0 TSI 280ps which launches you to 60 mph in a mind boggling 5.8 seconds.  Of course, you have a choice of either a manual or DSG twin clutch automatic transmission – with the option of 4×4 on some engine/gearbox combinations.

“…you can’t ignore the unique “GreenLine” engines scattered throughout the trim levels”

Familiar to the majority of the SKODA range, the trim levels begin with the ‘S’ and conclude with the top of the range Laurin & Klement.  The engine range varies as you climb the trim level ladder, so does the amount of optional extras available.

If you’re less about MPH and more about MPG – you can’t ignore the unique “GreenLine” engines scattered throughout the trim levels.  No longer a trim level in it’s own right, the GreenLine eco technology is available on the S, SE and SE L Executive trims.  This allows you to select a car which is great for the environment, but still tailored to your tastes and desires.

The ground breaking design has won award, after award, after award.  It has recently picked up the What Car? Car of the Year 2016 award for the Estate version.  Other accolades includes previous What Car? awards in addition to accreditations from Auto Express, UK Car of the Year awards and Fleet News.

Why we’d recommend the Superb SE L Executive…

The one thing you are not short of with the new Superb, is choice.  With a combination of 62 different trims, engines and body styles – you might wonder which to go for.  It needs to be stated you can’t make a bad choice, as they are all brilliant – however the particular gem is the 1.4 TSI 150ps Superb SE L Executive hatchback.

It could be argued that the 2.0 150ps TDI 150ps would make a better long distance cruiser, ideal for churning through motorway miles – but the punchy and super responsive petrol 1.4 is that little more eager and is nearly a thousand pounds cheaper than the diesel variant (comparing the 1.4 TSI 150ps with the 2.0 TDI 150ps).

The SE L Executive could be viewed as a more lavish trim level, but if you compare like for like on price against some of the German rivals, this is priced more as “middle of the range”.  It includes leather heated seats, a brilliant touch screen colour satellite navigation system, bi-xenon headlights with LED daytime running lights and 18” alloy wheels to complete the look.
