It’s clear from the distinguished list of awards, that the all new SKODA range offers above all things, fantastic value for money and practical, well built cars for the modern family. SKODA haloed this concept when they introduced the latest and greatest Fabia to the range. The Fabia name has been with us in various guises since about 2001 when it replaced the trusty little SKODA Felicia. Built initially as a city car, the Fabia has evolved into a super mini that is comfortable, economical, fun and extremely practical.
To its testament, the all new SKODA Fabia has so far racked up 6 awards in a little over a year. The awards credit varying aspects of the car, from its value and design, to its overall impact on the market. The highly influential car critics declared the Fabia the Overall Car of the Year in 2015, then a year later they awarded it the overall best small car and best small estate car award.
“Give or take, the difference between the equivalent Fabia hatchback and Fabia estate is around £1,900, so if you need the extra space, it’s not a huge premium to pay. “
The award winning range, begins with the Fabia S – a great little package filled with essentials, and ends at the exciting SE L, where cruise control, climate control and the like make any journey that bit more luxurious.
All trim levels are available as the nippy little hatchback, or as the more practical and spacious estate. Give or take, the difference between the equivalent Fabia hatchback and Fabia estate is around £1,900, so if you need the extra space, it’s not a huge premium to pay. It is worth noting that the back seats on the Fabia hatchback do fold down, giving you about 1,150 litres of loading space, which for a car of this size is incredible. If you do go for the estate version, from the SE trim and above, roof rails are standard (they are available on the Fabia S as an optional extra) – meaning you can carry extra storage or bulky items that you can’t quite get into the cabin comfortably.
The Fabia hatchback, although small on the outside (less than 4m long, or about 13 feet in old money) is very reasonably spaced inside. A 6 foot adult has plenty of head and leg room in the front and rear. The centre rear seat is made really for a child, however could seat an adult for shorter journeys.
“…active city stop which if you’re travelling below 20mph will prevent you from having a collision by applying the brakes”
Highlights of the car include the fantastic safety features included to protect the family if an unfortunate accident was to happen. Airbags line the interior of the car, while the cars computers keep you on track with Lane Assist preventing lane drift, and active city stop which if you’re travelling below 20mph will prevent you from having a collision by applying the brakes. Clever stuff.
If you’re looking to make a statement, the latest offering from SKODA is the “Colour Concept” option. It’s like turning the styling up to 11 on the dial. Off go the original alloys and in come 16” Beam alloys which are either black or white, in addition to a colour co-ordinated roof and wing mirrors.
The Rally inspired Fabia Monte Carlo
The “Monte Carlo” trim level may have migrated its way over to the Citigo and the Yeti range, however the badge was originally on the back of a SKODA Fabia. The Monte Carlo went so far to filling the void created by the departing Fabia vRS which we last saw in 2012. The latest Monte Carlo, like the vRS in the previous shape pays homage to the rallying success and pedigree that the brand has seen, particularly in more recent times with the Fabia R5 rally car.
This special little car, again available as hatch or estate, has numerous touches inspired by this rally history. Little touches like the chin spoiler and rear air diffuser really give this car a presence. You’re not forced into a petrol DSG like you were in the previous vRS, you have a range of engines available, from the frugal 1.0mpi to the 1.4 TDI 105ps. The best of the bunch is the mid-price ranged 1.2 TSI 110ps petrol, which goes very well and sounds every bit as good.
Which one should i go for?
While the Monte Carlo looks and drives great, for day to day use, we’d go for the 1.2 TSI 90ps Fabia SE L hatchback (or estate for that matter). It’s a few quid more than the 110ps variant of the lower spec Fabia SE – but we’d argue that for most part, you wouldn’t notice the difference in power, but you would notice the extra goodies that come with the SE L.
The seats feel really premium, which are accompanied by a front arm rest and other internal treats like climate control and cruise control (which includes a speed limiter, handy for town driving!). You also get smart looking 16” alloy wheels, LED daytime running lights and front fog lights, all as standard.
